Microsoft is bringing its Copilot AI assistant into Windows 11, where users will be able to open it from the taskbar while working in any application. The company presents it as a way to make more Windows users “power users,” with help for understanding content, adjusting settings and connecting with apps.
An assistant available across Windows
Windows Copilot is intended to be accessible without leaving the application a person is using. That placement could make it useful when a task involves information already on screen: Microsoft says the assistant will be able to summarize, paraphrase or explain content from open applications.
The interaction is through chat, similar to Bing’s implementation in Edge. Microsoft’s demonstration also showed Copilot opening apps, accessing plugins and reading PDFs. These examples suggest an assistant intended to respond to requests and help carry out tasks, rather than only answer questions.
Microsoft’s Panos Panay described Copilot as helping people take action, customize settings and connect across favorite apps. The aim is to put those kinds of assistance within reach as people use Windows, instead of limiting them to a separate destination.
Questions, explanations and practical tasks
Microsoft says users will be able to ask questions ranging from simple to complex. Panay offered examples that connect information seeking with everyday plans: checking the local time before calling family in Cyprus, or asking for help finding flights and accommodations for a trip during mid-winter break.
Those examples illustrate a broader role for the assistant. A user might ask for an explanation of material in an open app, then move on to a question or another task. The assistant’s usefulness will depend on how well it handles those requests and how effectively it can work with the apps and content involved.
Copilot is not intended to replace Windows Search. That distinction matters: Microsoft describes a conversational assistant with capabilities that reach into open applications, while Windows Search remains a separate feature. The announcement presents Copilot as an additional way to work with the computer.
Plugins extend what Copilot can do
Plugins are expected to play a central role. Microsoft is integrating them into Bing, and OpenAI is doing the same with ChatGPT. Microsoft and OpenAI also committed to supporting a shared AI plugin ecosystem, alongside making Bing the default search engine for ChatGPT.
In this model, plugins provide a way for an assistant to connect with additional functionality. Microsoft’s demonstration of Copilot accessing plugins points toward a system that can reach beyond chat responses. The source does not detail which plugins Windows Copilot will support, so the range of tasks available through them remains unclear.
The promise is convenience across tools: users could ask questions, work with open content and access connected capabilities through a single assistant. The practical experience will depend on the integrations available and how they fit with the apps people use.
A wider shift toward AI assistants
Copilot for Windows joins Microsoft’s Copilot for Office 365 and its AI offerings in Edge, as well as ChatGPT with plugins and Google’s Bard and AI search. Together, these products reflect the spread of large language models such as GPT-4 and PaLM-2 into digital tools used for work, search and creation.
Apple is described as a notable absence from that competition. The source says the company recently restricted internal use of ChatGPT and Copilot and is reportedly working on its own language model. It suggests that such a model could eventually underpin an assistant for iOS and MacOS, but presents that as a possibility rather than a confirmed product.
For Windows users, Copilot’s central question is how much useful work it can do from within the operating system. Its proposed combination of chat, explanations, settings help and plugins puts the assistant close to everyday tasks. What users can accomplish will depend on the features and integrations Microsoft makes available.
