The shift comes with a new Sonos app experience, the Sonos Ace Ultra headphones, the Sonos Beam Ultra soundbar, and an official name for the network that lets Sonos products work together across rooms: Sonos Fabric. The bigger question is whether new features can solve the same problem that hurt Sonos before, which is making complex audio systems feel dependable and easy to control.

Sonos 27 puts software back at the center

Sonos has reason to be careful about how it presents another app update. In 2024, software changes broke the app for many users and removed features such as volume control and accessibility tools meant to help blind people use the wireless speaker system. The company later acknowledged the mistake, considered bringing back the old app, removed its CEO, and put new leaders in front of customers to apologize.

That history matters because Sonos 27 is being introduced as the next foundation for the system. Sonos representatives say the company no longer wants to be viewed only as a speaker maker. Its new framing is broader: Sonos wants to be understood as an audio operating system.

The app changes described for Sonos 27 are practical as well as ambitious. Sonos says the update includes improved tab navigation, better room sorting, and changes to the volume knobs inside the app. In the fall, the company also plans to add system health views that can help diagnose connection issues for each product.

Those features address the everyday friction of using a multiroom setup. When speakers are spread across rooms, the app becomes the control surface for the entire experience. If navigation, room order, volume controls, or connection status are hard to understand, the hardware can feel worse than it is.

AI becomes an opt-in control layer

The headline software addition is Sonos 27voice, a generative AI integration being released in early access. It is designed to let users speak to Sonos speakers in a way that resembles voice interactions with Amazon's Alexa or a Google Home speaker. One example is asking for music based on mood.

Sonos 27voice also includes a Model Context Protocol. According to the source, that can connect to an AI service of choice, allowing a user to ask ChatGPT to play music on Sonos speakers.

The company is also emphasizing Sonos Custom Agents. These let users customize agents for tasks across the system, such as triggering speakers in a particular room at a particular time. Sonos says users can also change the voices used by those agents.

Importantly, the AI features in products and in the Sonos 27 app are opt-in. That means customers who do not want to use them can avoid them entirely. Given the reaction to the 2024 app changes, that choice is not a small detail. It signals that Sonos is trying to avoid forcing another major behavior change on its users all at once.

Sonos Fabric connects rooms, speakers, and headphones

Sonos Fabric is the new name for the network technology that allows Sonos products to stay in sync across rooms. The idea is not new to Sonos systems, but the company is now making it a more visible part of the product story.

Two features are tied to this renewed focus. The first is portable surround. It allows users to move devices from one room into another and have them sync in the new location. For example, a main soundbar by a TV could work with speakers brought in from other rooms for movie night, with Sonos products detecting location and managing what audio plays where.

The second feature is Headphone Linking. This lets audio move between speakers and headphones. That matters because Sonos' first over-ear headphones, the Sonos Ace, arrived in 2024 and were described as very good, but they did not work inside the broader Sonos speaker ecosystem.

The Sonos Ace Ultra is intended to fix that gap. It runs on Sonos Fabric, connects to other Sonos speakers over Wi-Fi, and supports switching playback between speakers and headphones. It also has 35 hours of battery life and can connect to devices through USB-C and 3.5 mm.

New hardware shows the scope of the reset

The Sonos Beam Ultra is the other major device in the announcement. It is an upgrade to the existing Sonos Beam and includes nine drivers, which is four more than earlier Beams. The drivers are upward-firing, bouncing sound off the ceiling for better acoustics.

The Beam Ultra also includes AI-enabled features. One example is AI speech enhancement, which is meant to make dialog easier to understand in loud scenes. For connections, the soundbar supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and wired HDMI eARC.

Together, the Ace Ultra and Beam Ultra show how Sonos is linking hardware launches to its larger software story. The headphones matter because they connect more directly into the speaker ecosystem. The soundbar matters because it adds both more drivers and AI-assisted listening features.

The compatibility question is still open

The biggest limitation in the announcement concerns older systems. A Sonos representative said Sonos 27 will work in the Sonos S2 app, but not the S1 app, which controls some older Sonos equipment. That means owners of older Sonos hardware will not be able to access the new AI features.

Sonos also said not every product will support every new feature because Sonos 27 is designed around newer hardware capabilities. At the same time, the company says it wants to keep supporting products with security and ongoing updates for as long as the hardware allows.

Even so, product-by-product compatibility and upgrade path details are not available yet. Sonos says those details will come at a later date.

That leaves the company with a delicate balance. Sonos is pitching a more capable, AI-aware audio operating system, but many customers already own systems that may include older products. The promise of Sonos 27 will depend not only on new features, but on whether users can understand which parts of the system they can actually use.

The new approach is clear: better app controls, AI that users can opt into, Sonos Fabric as a named platform, and new hardware built to move audio more freely around the home. For Sonos, the challenge is just as clear. The company has to make the software feel reliable enough that customers can focus on listening again.
