A hit that sounds unlike his earlier work
One reason “Rubberz” drew scrutiny is that it marks a sharp break from Fenix Flexin’s established sound. He has primarily been associated with trap-influenced West Coast rap. The new track instead leans into ‘80s UK synth pop, with a vocal melody described as clearly influenced by Morrissey.
The performance choice adds to the surprise. On “Rubberz,” Fenix adopts a fake British accent, which makes the song feel even further removed from his usual lane.
