Meta is widening access to AI image creation with Muse Image, a new generator built by Meta Superintelligence Labs. The feature, internally code-named Mango, is designed to work across several of Meta’s major consumer apps rather than live as a stand-alone experiment.
The launch puts image generation, prompt-based editing and AI effects closer to where people already post, message and browse. For Meta, the move also extends its broader push to build more AI services into its existing platforms.
Where Muse Image will be available
Muse Image will be available for free through the Meta AI app. Meta is also bringing it into Instagram Stories and WhatsApp, which means users will be able to create and edit images inside familiar social and messaging environments.
The basic idea is similar to other AI image generators: users describe what they want, and the system creates an image from that prompt. The examples described by Meta include playful, cartoonish and highly customized images made for sharing across the company’s apps.
Meta says Muse includes “presets,” which are prefabricated image prompts meant to “spark ideas.” That feature is aimed at users who want to try image generation but do not immediately know what to ask for.
What users can make and edit
Muse Image is not limited to creating a new picture from a blank prompt. The model also supports prompt-based image editing, allowing users to modify images for use across Meta’s apps and platforms.
Meta described several examples of how the tool could be used. A user could ask it to create a mock-up of them in front of a historical landmark, remove a photobomber from the background of a shot, or build a functional QR code from a custom prompt.
Those examples show the range Meta is trying to cover: entertainment, personal image editing and utility. The image generator can support simple sharing, but it can also handle practical edits that would normally require more specialized tools.
In plain terms, Muse Image gives users three broad paths:
- Create a new image from a written prompt.
- Start from a preset prompt when they need an idea.
- Edit an existing image through prompt-based instructions.
Instagram Stories and Marketplace get AI use cases
Meta is also launching a set of new AI effects for Instagram Stories supported by Muse. These effects include customizable filters that can modify existing photos.
That matters because Instagram Stories is already built around fast visual creation. By placing AI effects there, Meta is making Muse part of the normal process of changing, stylizing and sharing images.
Meta’s accompanying video also points to uses beyond casual posts. One example involves creating custom ads. Another shows a person using Muse to explore how a used couch might look in their garage.
The couch example is designed to connect with Facebook Marketplace, Meta’s Craigslist-like destination for used furniture and accessories. In that setting, AI image generation becomes less about making a funny picture and more about helping someone imagine how an item could fit into a real space.
Free use, limits and what comes next
Meta says Muse Image is free for “everyday creation.” However, the company also says that after a certain limit, users will need to use Meta’s subscription plans.
The source does not specify what that limit is, how the subscription plans apply, or whether limits will vary by app. For now, the key point is that free access is part of the launch, but unlimited use is not promised.
Meta also said Muse Video is “already in development.” The name suggests an AI video generator, and TechCrunch reached out to Meta for more information.
Muse Image arrives after Meta released several AI apps and services over the past year. Those include an assistant called Creator and Pocket, an app that can be used to vibe code video games.
The company has also been accused of having a nebulous AI strategy. Even so, it is still on track to spend a whole lot on AI infrastructure this year as it continues building out its services.
Why this launch matters
Muse Image is important because it places AI image generation inside apps people already use to communicate and publish. Instead of asking users to move to a separate tool, Meta is bringing creation, editing and effects into Meta AI, Instagram Stories and WhatsApp.
The launch also shows how Meta is connecting AI creation to different behaviors across its platforms. In Stories, Muse supports visual effects and photo edits. In WhatsApp, it can support image creation inside messaging. In Facebook Marketplace, it can help users imagine how an item might look in a space.
That range is the central point of the product. Muse Image is not framed as one isolated AI tool. It is a model that can power image generation, editing, ads, filters and shopping-related previews across Meta’s apps.
