Interactive visuals bring complex ideas into ChatGPT conversations

OpenAI is introducing Intelligent UI with GPT-6, adding interactive visuals such as diagrams, charts and task-specific calculators to ChatGPT conversations. Users will be able to reduce the amount of visual content, and the feature is rolling out across paid and free tiers.

Interactive visuals may increase reliance on AI answers, but the feature is a routine, adjustable product update with only a mild idiocracy lean.

Interactive visuals bring complex ideas into ChatGPT conversations

ChatGPT is adding a more visual way to answer questions. OpenAI’s Intelligent UI can bring diagrams, charts, calculators and other interactive elements into a conversation, giving users something to explore or adjust instead of relying on text alone.

Answers users can work with

The new interface is designed to make complex topics easier to learn. Some of its visuals are interactive: a chart might be editable, a button could be tapped, or a calculator could be tailored to a particular task.

That changes the role of an answer. A visual can help explain an idea, while controls give users a way to test or personalize information as they go. The feature is intended for everyday requests as well as learning, including planning a recipe or a trip.

From airplane lift to bicycle mechanics

In a demonstration for journalists, OpenAI staff showed ChatGPT generating diagrams to explain abstract ideas. Product manager Aarush Selvan described a college student asking the chatbot to explore how an airplane wing generates lift. ChatGPT responded with diagrams intended to show how planes stay in the air.

The company also presented examples tied to practical tasks and familiar subjects. They included recipe visuals, a bicycle mechanics diagram, a map for a multi-day hiking excursion and a personal savings calculator.

These examples show how the interface could adapt the form of an answer to the question. A mechanical concept may be clearer as a diagram, while a hiking plan can benefit from a map. For a savings question, a calculator offers a way to work with the information directly.

Visual detail remains adjustable

Intelligent UI will be customizable. Users who prefer fewer visuals will be able to dial them back, giving them some control over how ChatGPT presents its answers.

That option matters because a visual format may not suit every question or every reader. The rollout combines more interactive responses with a setting users can adjust to their preferences.

Availability with GPT-6

OpenAI says Intelligent UI is rolling out globally with GPT-6 for Pro, Plus, Business and Enterprise users. It will arrive the following day for users on the Free and lower-cost Go tiers.

The launch brings a new presentation style to ChatGPT conversations: answers can pair explanations with diagrams, maps, charts or tools users can manipulate. Whether someone is learning how lift works or planning a trip, the aim is to make the response more useful by giving information a form suited to the task.
