Apple is seemingly working on a way for iPhone users to prove that a photo came from an iPhone camera and was not AI fakery. The feature, called Apple Reference Image, appears in iOS 27 beta 5 code references and is not currently live.
What Apple Reference Image is meant to do
According to 9to5Mac, Apple Reference Image can embed provenance metadata into iPhone photographs when they are captured. That metadata is designed to help show where a photo originated and support later authentication.
The important detail is timing. The provenance information is added at the point of capture, not after a photo has already moved through editing tools, messaging apps, or online platforms. That gives the system a clearer basis for saying a photograph started as an iPhone camera image.
The feature is aimed at a growing problem: viewers increasingly need evidence that a photo is an actual camera capture rather than AI fakery. Apple Reference Image would not make every iPhone picture automatically authenticated. Instead, it appears to create a separate path for photos taken with authentication in mind.
How users would turn it on
Apple Reference Image is described as off by default in a privacy disclosure found in the iOS beta. If Apple releases it, 9to5Mac says users can enable it through Settings > Camera > Reference Image > Reference Mode.
The source also says only photographs taken with a new “Reference” option in the iPhone Camera app would include the provenance information needed for authentication. That means ordinary camera use would not automatically produce an authenticated reference image.
This approach gives users a choice. Someone who wants a photo to carry provenance data would need to select the right mode before taking it. Someone who does not want to use the system could leave it off.
The authentication step is separate
MacRumors reports that authentication does not happen automatically. A user must tap a Reference badge on the photograph to start the process.
That process reportedly sends the raw image and embedded provenance data to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers for verification. The provenance data includes sensor signatures, capture time frame, and unique hardware identifiers.
After verification, the system returns an authenticated version of the image with a uniquely assigned ID. According to MacRumors, authenticated photos can be viewed on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
The source states that Apple does not access the raw photo itself during this process. However, Apple may receive sensor data that lets it block authentication for images tied to compromised sensors, or revoke earlier authentication for images associated with that sensor.
Why this matters for AI image trust
Apple Reference Image sounds similar in purpose to the C2PA Content Credentials provenance standard. That standard can help trace how and where an image was made and whether generative AI tools were used to create or alter it.
Camera companies including Canon, Nikon, Sony, FujiFilm, and Leica have been gradually introducing C2PA Content Credentials into their hardware. Google’s Pixel 10 phone cameras also support the standard. Apple has notably avoided adopting it.
