Google is rolling out Universal Cart in the US, bringing products from multiple retailers into one digital shopping space. Available through Google Search and the Gemini app, the tool is designed to help shoppers keep track of finds and make purchase decisions across platforms.
One place to collect products
Universal Cart allows people to save products from different retailers in a single cart. Items added through the Gemini app and Google Search AI Mode appear in that shared space, so shoppers can gather options without keeping separate lists for each service.
That setup could make online browsing easier to organize. Someone comparing products can use Google’s platforms to find items, then return to the same cart to review them together. The cart is intended to work across Google services, though the launch currently covers Search and Gemini.
Google has also said it plans to bring Universal Cart to Gmail and YouTube. The company has not given a timeline for those integrations, so they are future plans rather than part of the current rollout.
Price and stock updates, plus checkout choices
Google says it will notify users about price drops and restocks for products they have saved. Instead of repeatedly checking each retailer’s website, shoppers can receive updates through the cart. The tool can also show promotional codes it finds alongside saved products.
When it is time to buy, users can choose between paying with Google Wallet or moving an item into the retailer’s own cart and completing checkout there. That gives shoppers a choice between using Google’s payment option and continuing directly with the merchant.
Universal Cart can also work with Google Wallet to review the perks offered by saved credit cards and help users pick a payment method. The feature brings payment considerations into the shopping process, although the source does not describe how the tool weighs those perks or which cards it supports.
A new role for AI in shopping
Google first previewed Universal Cart at its I/O event in May. Its rollout arrives ahead of the holiday shopping season, when the company hopes a unified cart can help people stay organized and save money.
The product also reflects a broader push to use AI for online shopping. OpenAI and Meta have launched agentic AI assistants that can shop online on a user’s behalf. Shopify has recently said it is opening its platform to more AI agents so they can browse and purchase from Shopify listings.
These efforts point toward a shopping experience in which AI handles more of the work: finding products, tracking changes, and helping with checkout. Universal Cart’s current role is more focused on collecting items and supporting decisions across Google services. Its planned Gmail and YouTube connections could extend that reach, though Google has not announced when they will arrive.
What shoppers can expect
For now, Universal Cart combines product discovery through Google Search and Gemini with a shared place to save items, monitor availability and price changes, and choose a checkout route. It does not replace the retailer’s own checkout in every case; shoppers can transfer products back to merchant carts instead.
The value of the tool will depend on how useful its updates and promotional codes are, and how smoothly people can move from discovery to purchase. Google’s launch puts another AI shopping option in front of US users just as other platforms are making similar bets on automated shopping assistance.
