Ford is beginning its AI assistant rollout where many owners already manage their cars: the Ford and Lincoln mobile apps. The new chatbot is designed to answer practical questions about a specific Ford or Lincoln vehicle, from fuel levels and tire pressure to whether a truck can tow a motor boat.
The company plans to move the experience from phones into the vehicle itself in 2027. For now, the assistant is app-based, giving Ford a way to reach more owners before the in-car version arrives.
An app-first start for Ford AI assistant
The assistant is rolling out now in the Ford and Lincoln mobile apps. Because the app is connected to the customer’s vehicle, the chatbot can use information tied to the owner’s particular make and model rather than giving only generic answers.
That connection matters. A vehicle assistant is most useful when it can respond to questions that depend on the actual car or truck in front of the owner. Ford says the assistant can know details such as fuel levels, cargo capacity, and towing capabilities.
Ford is releasing the assistant in waves. The company’s goal is to make it available to 8 million owners of Ford and Lincoln vehicles.
“By taking an app-first approach, we are bringing the future of Ford intelligence directly to customers instantly,” Mike Aragon, Ford’s president for integrated services, wrote in a blog post. “You don’t have to wait to buy a brand-new vehicle; we’re upgrading the ownership experience you already have, starting today.”
What owners can ask
The assistant is meant for questions that often send owners into manuals, spec sheets, or service screens. Ford says it can answer questions from the owner’s manual and provide live updates from the vehicle’s telemetry system.
That could make the app a more direct interface for ownership tasks. Instead of searching for a detail manually, owners can ask about the vehicle’s capabilities or future service needs through the chatbot.

Ford is not alone. Rivian recently launched its own voice assistant, and Mercedes-Benz has done the same. Other companies are working with established technology suppliers, including BMW with Amazon’s Alexa and General Motors with Google’s Gemini.
Vehicles with Google’s built-in operating system, including Volvo and Polestar models, will also be getting Gemini. Ford, meanwhile, has said its own assistant is being designed to be chatbot-agnostic, so it can work with a variety of different large language models.
That approach gives Ford room to use different AI systems while still building a Ford-specific experience. Earlier this year, the company announced plans for a chatbot alongside promises for a future Level 3 “eyes off” driver assist system. At that time, Ford did not disclose which AI developers it was working with.
The dashboard version comes later
The app rollout is only the first phase. Ford plans to introduce a voice-powered assistant inside its vehicles sometime in 2027. Until then, customers will use the chatbot through the mobile apps.
Ford’s longer-term vision is not phone mirroring through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Aragon described the future in-car version as “deep, thoughtful intelligence embedded directly into the driving experience.”
In the meantime, Ford and Lincoln Digital Experiences, which are Android-based, will feature Gemini. That system can help with navigation, sending text messages, or playing media.
Ford ultimately wants the new assistant to handle both vehicle-specific requests and infotainment-level queries. In that version, an owner could use one assistant for questions about the vehicle and for tasks such as navigation or media, creating a custom system tailored to their preferences.
Free now, with one unanswered question
Ford says the assistant will be free to use rather than locked behind a paywall or subscription. That is an important detail for owners who may see the app-based assistant as part of the existing ownership experience.
There is still one unresolved point. Ford would not say whether the assistant will remain free after it becomes available through the vehicle’s own operating system.
