The feature offers useful spending summaries, but gives Claude access to sensitive account details and up to two years of transaction history.

Claude’s Personal Finance Feature Reads Your Bank Activity

Claude can now connect to bank and card accounts to help users understand their spending. Anthropic’s Personal Finance feature uses Plaid to bring account information into the chatbot, where users can ask about purchases, bills, balances, and potential savings.

Questions about spending and upcoming bills

A user might ask where their money went during the month and receive a spending overview organized into categories such as rent and utilities, shopping, and food. Claude can also respond to questions about which bills remain before the next payday or whether a large purchase, such as a holiday trip, appears affordable.

The feature is intended to make financial information easier to interpret through conversation. Users can ask Claude to explain unfamiliar financial terms or look at their balances and transactions, rather than reviewing account activity on their own.

What Claude can see

Connecting an account gives Claude access to information including the bank’s name, account names and types, the last four digits associated with an account, balances, and credit limits. The feature can also access up to two years’ worth of transaction history.

Plaid facilitates the connection. Anthropic says Claude’s access is read-only: the chatbot cannot move, manage, or invest a user’s money. The connection also means Claude does not see banking passwords, and the bank does not have to handle unvetted AI bots accessing accounts.

That read-only limit defines what the feature can do, but it does not make the information involved trivial. Account labels, balances, credit limits, and a long history of purchases can give a chatbot a detailed view of someone’s finances. Choosing to connect accounts therefore means allowing Claude to use that data to answer questions and produce summaries.

Beta availability and limits

Personal Finance is rolling out in beta this week to Claude Pro, Max, and Ultra plan subscribers in the US. The feature is designed to help people review and understand their finances, and Anthropic says it is not designed to give investment advice.

That distinction matters when interpreting answers about affordability or possible savings. Claude can organize account information and respond to questions based on it, but Anthropic’s stated scope does not position the chatbot as an investment adviser or as a service that takes financial actions for the user.

A first step for AI and personal finances

The launch follows OpenAI introducing a similar ChatGPT feature in May, also connected to bank accounts through Plaid. The two announcements point to a growing use of conversational AI for examining personal financial data.

Anthropic describes Personal Finance as a first step. Its announcement says that for larger money decisions, people are best served by Claude working alongside licensed professionals and regulated firms they trust. The company says it is exploring how to make that possible in Claude and welcomes input from banks, wealth managers, and financial services companies.

For now, the feature centers on reviewing information and answering questions. Its usefulness depends on connecting financial accounts, while its boundaries are read-only access and a stated focus on explaining and summarizing rather than investing or managing money.
