ChatGPT Now Moves Into Apple Intelligence Across Devices

Apple Intelligence now includes ChatGPT in iOS 18.2 and macOS Sequoia, bringing OpenAI's assistant into Siri and Apple's writing tools. The feature is optional, does not require an OpenAI account, and arrives alongside several other AI additions from Apple.

ChatGPT Now Moves Into Apple Intelligence Across Devices

Apple has moved ChatGPT into the center of Apple Intelligence, making OpenAI's assistant available across key parts of its operating systems. The integration brings ChatGPT to iOS 18.2 for iPhones and iPads and to macOS Sequoia for silicon-based Macs.

The change gives Siri and Apple's writing tools a new way to handle requests that need more advanced AI support. It also makes OpenAI a key technology partner for Apple's broader AI push.

How ChatGPT Fits Into Apple Intelligence

ChatGPT now works directly with Siri and writing tools across Apple's operating systems. When Siri determines that ChatGPT is better suited for a request, it can pass the task to OpenAI's system, but only after the feature has been enabled.

That opt-in design matters because the integration is not simply a background replacement for Siri. Apple is positioning ChatGPT as an added layer for more complex tasks, while keeping user control over when the tool is used and what information is shared.

The rollout follows Apple Intelligence's debut at WWDC last June. The ChatGPT support is now part of iOS 18.2 and macOS Sequoia, expanding the AI features available on iPhones, iPads and silicon-based Macs.

OpenAI Shows The Feature, But The Early Demo Is Modest

OpenAI folded Apple's announcement into its 12 Days of OpenAI product launches. In a quick 10-minute stream, CEO Sam Altman and two other hosts demonstrated features including image generation through the ChatGPT iPhone app.

The examples were useful for showing where the integration is headed, but they also showed its current limits. One demo involved creating playlists through ChatGPT, yet users still have to manually load those playlists into Spotify before listening.

On the Mac side, the demonstrations stayed basic. ChatGPT was shown working with PDF files, which illustrates practical document assistance but does not yet suggest a dramatic change in daily Mac workflows.

Privacy Controls Are Central To The Rollout

Apple's ChatGPT integration can be used without an OpenAI account. If a user does not sign in, OpenAI will not store requests or use them to train its AI, and the system hides the user's IP address to keep sessions private.

Signing in changes the privacy arrangement. When a user connects an OpenAI account, OpenAI's privacy rules apply instead. Apple also says users can control exactly when ChatGPT is used and what information it receives.

That structure gives Apple a way to add stronger generative AI features while still separating account-based OpenAI use from a more private default experience. For users, the practical question is whether they want the convenience of an account-linked ChatGPT experience or the simpler no-account setup.

Other AI Features Arrive With iOS 18.2

ChatGPT is not the only Apple Intelligence feature arriving with iOS 18.2. Apple is also introducing a group of creative and writing tools across the update.

  • Image Playground supports creative photo editing in Messages.
  • Genmoji creates personalized emojis.
  • Image Wand turns sketches into images.
  • Writing Tools can make texts more dynamic through simple descriptions.

iOS 16 and later users can access these features from the Camera Control side button. The system also integrates with Google Lens to identify objects, while GPT-4 helps break down complex diagrams.

Apple is planning more changes for Siri in the coming months or years. The company intends to make Siri understand more personal context and work with hundreds of new commands in both Apple and third-party applications. A new Sketch style is also being added to Image Playground.

Some Features Are Still Delayed Or Region-Limited

The ChatGPT integration did not arrive as early as originally planned. It was initially planned for last fall, and Apple Intelligence's broader development has been gradual, with many features shown months ago not arriving until 2025.

European users also face a separate delay. EU regulations are blocking these AI features in European markets, though they are expected to be available starting in April 2025.

OpenAI has been active on several other fronts at the same time. The company has updated Canvas, released Sora, introduced a new fine-tuning method and launched its final o1 model. Sora is also not available in the EU due to regulations.

For Apple users, the near-term takeaway is straightforward: ChatGPT is now part of Apple Intelligence where supported, but the experience remains controlled, optional and still developing. The most important changes may come as Siri gains more personal context and broader command support over the coming months or years.
